The entire Derwent Walk covers a distance of 11 miles from Swalwell to Consett following the track of the original Derwent Valley Railway.

It is now a mix of woodlands, meadows, wetlands and riverside walks.

Derwenthaugh Park features a multi-user route offering a 4 mile circular route accessible for cycling, horse riding and wheelchairs. The surface is a mix of smooth tarmac and flattened hard core with some gradients.

Disabled parking (free) and a wheelchair accessible toilet is available at the Swalwell Vistor Centre.
